It Was a Great Day Out at Avon Croft Museum of Buildings in Worcestershire, what else would an enthusiastic building surveyor do on his day off !

Steeped in building history Avon Croft Museum of Buildings Nr Bromsgrove was an irresistible day out for David and his friends.

Home to over 30 different buildings and structures many from the local area they have been restored on site for all to see. The collection features a full-size Windmill and various other buildings including a fabulous original prefab house likening to David‘s love of Municipal Houses built just after the war, the example at the museum being one of the first types. Why not look at our previous features on Howard and Minox houses, the methods in quick construction changing as time has evolved.

The Windmill is a top attraction at the museum as well as the Threshing Barn and Toll House.

David Simmonds at Avon Croft Museum

The day was enjoyed by all as David talked through his vast historical building knowledge from stories including types of brickwork laying patterns, Stretcher Bond, Flemish bond and other information, that only an experienced tradesman, expert surveyor or building historian would know.

It’s also all about the chimneys David explains often overlooked by many and yet such an obvious part of the building, so many with ornate styles as well as the simple column that many are.

David tells us as an older child in the 70’s being taken by his father to see the museum, also along with looking at many other historical buildings in the area, the beginnings of an accomplished building enthusiast began, now climaxing in the unparallelled knowledge and understanding of the built environment he has today.

Not only has he been involved in Surveying, but he also has hands on experience in refurbishments, renovations and adaptions work. Always Project Managing, but often in times gone by, physically joining in the actual work’s programme which makes that beautiful wording ‘Knowledge is King’ very applicable in todays Construction, Surveying and Capital Works Programmes.

Fancy finding out more about the building you own? from domestic to corporate why not try having a building consultation, or why not have an initial project consultation, it’s good to share ideas and gain insight, getting good advice before taking the next step in your project or having a deeper more forensic survey is a wise move before making real time decisions, and often avoids costly mistakes.
