My Next Adventure in my surveying of Municipal Houses

has led me onto the desirable pre-war 1930’s long lasting red brick houses, often with grand chimneys which were quite elaborate, the chimneystacks, were often taller than standard. The original wooden framed windows that had iron casements have now been changed for UPVC windows

The roofs have red clay tiles and were often built in a hip roof construction. With well-appointed half round ridge and hip tiles. Porches are simple hoods/canopies although some doors are set back into an arched brick porch way. Gable ends are often a timber framed make up with a brick tile hung infill.

Some streets I have walked have many of these properties all with a good solid base wall construction, often in Staffordshire blue engineers or classic red engineers. The main walls, quality of brick and brickwork looks impressive sometimes with stone window surrounds elevating the look and style.

Everything was laid on concrete foundations and the houses are resistant to weathering with a longevity that can last over a century. The style and standard have been unmatched ever since they were built.

Gardens were often plentiful in size and many houses had driveways and associated garages.

Post war some of this style of house appeared, but local authorities tended to lean towards prefabricated properties in a bid to solve the housing crisis.
